Innocent man seeks police probe

A MAN wrongly convicted of killing his wife is calling for an investigation into the police handling of the 1996 case, according to yesterday’s Beijing News.

His call came as a traffic police officer admitted during a trial at Wuhu City Intermediate People’s Court on Monday that he had raped and killed the woman.

Yu Yingsheng was arrested in December 22, 1996, just 20 days after his wife was found dead at their home in Bengbu, a city in east China’s Anhui Province.

He served 17 years in jail before the provincial higher court reviewed the case in May 2013 and, in August, overturned the verdict due to unclear and insufficient evidence.

Meanwhile, police reopened an investigation and arrested Wu Yuanqin, a local traffic policeman, in November the same year.

At his trial, prosecutors said Wu had met the woman, surnamed Han, in November 1996 and had visited her on December 2 when she was at home alone.

Han resisted his sexual advances, they said, but he tied her hands behind her back, covered her face with a pillow and raped her. Han suffocated during the rape, prosecutors said.

They said Wu then cut her on the neck, turned on the gas and lit a candle in an attempt to destroy the evidence,.

Wu also tried to make it look as if Han had been killed during a robbery, they added.

Tests showed that semen found in Han’s body belonged to Wu, the court was told.

Wu said he couldn’t remember the details but admitted his guilt and expressed his sorrow.

The court hasn’t announced a verdict.

Yu, who is seeking compensation of 1.47 million yuan (US$237,000), told the newspaper: “The real killer has pleaded guilty. Finally, justice prevails. Also, here is an explanation and relief for my dead wife.”

He added: “I hope Wu could receive his due punishment. I hate him though he said he felt so regretful and expressed his apology. Could it be said that it was useful to say sorry after he killed my wife?”

Yu said he wanted an official investigation into the police involved in the case who had identified him as the culprit.

“After I was released, my family and I have started to ask the provincial higher court, Bengbu’s political and legal authority and Bengbu police to investigate those involved in the case.”

Yu said many of those involved in the original investigation had been promoted.

“So far, we never ever gained reply,” he said.

“We haven’t even received an apology from authorities.”
