Innocent man seeks to clear his name

A man wrongly detained for 17 months because he had the same name as a suspect is seeking 1.76 million yuan (US$269,000) compensation and an apology.

Chen Jianzhong, a vegetable wholesaler from east China’s Fujian Province, was apprehended at an airport in Beijing in August 2013 in connection with forging branded cigarettes in south China’s Guangdong Province.

According to a report on news website thepaper.cn, his name was given to police by others involved in the case. However, at his trial in March 2014, two others charged with the same offense said he wasn’t the man they had named. The court didn’t announce a verdict in the case and it wasn’t until January last year that prosecutors dropped the charges.

“I was jailed for 17 months for shady and unclear reasons,” he told the website. “I want my justice.”

Last month, he appealed to prosecutors to clear his name, apologize, investigate and punish those who had pinned the case on him, and to pay compensation.

Chen said his physical and mental status had suffered during his detention and police had tortured him into making a false confession, beating him for several hours.

“Now, I can’t sleep all night and my memory is failing,” he said, “Previously, I could earn more than 1 million yuan a year. But now I am jobless. Our family is in depression. As my name was ruined, many of my previous business partners are refusing my business.”

Prosecutors are said to be considering his request, the website reported.
