Input error brings Red Cross Society into spotlight

THE Red Cross Society of China said that a mistyped figure has aroused public doubts about its investment in two hospitals in Yushu, a Tibetan-inhabited prefecture in northwest Qinghai Province, which was ruined by last year's earthquake.

Sun Lin, vice president of the charity group's Qinghai branch, said workers mistyped the construction space of the Zhiduo County Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital as 5,600 square meters, while the correct figure is 1,050 square meters, the Beijing Times reported today.

Sun said the Red Cross Society in Qinghai had spent 14.2 million yuan (US$2.2 million) building the hospital, the same amount for another hospital of similar size in Zaduo County.

Earlier netizens questioned why the two hospitals of different sizes cost the same amount of money to build.
