Inquiry after cop shoots cousins dead

A POLICE officer is under inquiry after shooting two villagers dead at a fair in southwest China's Guizhou Province.

Police said the officer responded properly because the villagers tried to snatch his gun, today's West China Metropolis Daily reported, although witnesses disputed this.

Officer Zhang Lei, of Bogong Town in Anshun City's Guanling County, was trying to settle a dispute between the two villagers and other people on Tuesday afternoon when he fired two shots in warning, police said yesterday.

Cousins Guo Yonghua and Guo Zhihua tried to grab his gun but the officer shot them dead, police said.

A witness surnamed Liu told the newspaper that Zhang shot at Guo Yonghua's head soon after he fired two warning shots. Then he shot his cousin in the torso, and as he tried to crawl away, Zhang fired a second shot at his head, Liu said.

Zhang threatened to kill anyone who sent them to hospital, Liu said.
