Inquiry into deadly breach

OFFICIALS have launched a probe into a reservoir breach in Jilin Province in which 40 people are dead or missing while workers at the region's other reservoirs were ordered to stay alert ahead of a new round of downpours, authorities said yesterday.

On July 28, about 4 million cubic meters of water gushed out of the Dahe Reservoir through a wide gap, destroying five downstream villages in Changshan Township in the suburbs of Huadian City, Jilin Province.

Three officials in Changshan have been sacked for not doing enough to prevent the flood devastation but the exact cause of the breach has not yet been determined, officials said.

Water in nine of the 18 large reservoirs in Jilin, along with 30 medium reservoirs, was at dangerous levels yesterday.

The State Flood Control and Disaster Relief Headquarters urged northeast provinces, including Jilin, to be prepared to take emergency measures to prevent reservoir breaches as a new round of heavy rains is expected to pound the region from this weekend.

Flood-triggered disasters have killed more than 1,450 people this year, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
