Insider blames crayfish poisoning on detergent

ONE week after 19 people in Nanjing, neighboring Jiangsu Province, developed acute muscle breakdown after eating crayfish, local authorities still cannot pin down the cause of the strange disease but a business insider said it was definitely the washing powder the vendors used to clean the muddy crustaceans.

Though Nanjing government said at a press conference last Tuesday that they were certain the washing powder, or oxalic acid, could not cause these symptoms, the insider surnamed Mao told today's Oriental Morning Post that the washing powder had more formulas than oxalic acid.

The detergent helps to clean crayfish, a scavenger that it can live in polluted water.

"There were a lot more toxic substances in the powder other than oxalic acid," Mao said. "We vendors never touch the washing powder with bare hands and never eat crayfishes cleaned with the powder."

Last week 19 crayfish eaters were hospitalized in Nanjing with unbearable muscle pains, some of them suffering rapid kidney failure. They were diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis. Some victims were still in critical condition, the report said.
