Insurance woman 'poisoned 2'

AN insurance saleswoman was arrested for allegedly poisoning her brother-in-law and a neighbor's son to cash in life insurance policies.

Police of Shangqiu City, Henan Province, said Zhang Rong bought three policies for her 53-year-old brother-in-law, surnamed Ran, who had learning difficulties and was looked after by Zhang and her husband.

Zhang took Ran to a market on her electric moped on January 7, where she allegedly asked him to drink water containing toxic pills to "prevent him from catching a cold."

She then persuaded Ran to ride her moped, hoping that when he lost consciousness and fell from the vehicle he would be crushed by passing traffic and it would look like a accident, said police.

Zhang admitted killing her neighbor's son five years ago. Zhang lent 2,000 yuan (US$ 304.93) to the boy's family to buy insurance, but they didn't return the money. Angered, she mixed pills with the boy's food and poisoned him. The boy's family gave her 20,000 yuan of the payout as thanks for selling them the policy.
