Internet companies shut down over erotic material
CHINA has shut down or suspended several Internet companies for spreading erotic content, the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications said yesterday.
The companies, including online storage network Xunlei Ltd, have been given administrative penalties for spreading pornographic videos and pictures and fined the maximum 100,000 yuan (US$16,000).
Some people had been found using online storage and social networks to distribute obscene content for money. Several have been arrested and put in criminal detention, the office said.
In March, along with the Cyberspace Administration of China, the office launched a campaign to crack down on pornographic, violent or terrorist content on websites to protect minors.
The office also said a publishing house in central China’s Hunan Province has been investigated by police for pirating textbooks.
