Internet users select 鈥楪ood Samaritans鈥
TEN individuals and groups have been declared China’s “Good Samaritans” for the first quarter of 2016, after being selected by Internet users.
The winners were announced on Wednesday following votes cast by hundreds of thousands of people since April 1, according to Xinhua News Agency, the initiator and sponsor of the event.
They include Chu Yude, a renowned surgeon who invented a one person-operated colonoscopy exam that eases patients’ pain. He only charges a regular consultation fee, which has saved his patients 1 million yuan (US$154,500) over the years. He has raised donations to save poor patients and even lent his own money to patients.
The winners also include Bi Laying, a pig breeder. She and her father used more than 400,000 yuan they had earned over the past 30 years to help more than 1,000 impoverished students.
Another winner is Chen Yucun, an expert on pandas. Chen, 72, has devoted all of his energy and time to improving the survival rate of the threatened species. He is therefore nick-named “Father of the Panda.” He has also been looking after the panda Basi, the oldest living panda in the world, for more than 30 years.
The online vote, held since 2010, is conducted quarterly to promote ordinary people’s deeds and improve moral awareness.
