Is it an arch, or just plain pants?
Its designers call it the "Arch of the Orient" and say it is the "No. 1 Gate in the World," but a new skyscraper being built in Suzhou looks more like a pair of long underpants to the thousands of people who have been ridiculing the structure online.
The 301.8-meter arch is due to be completed by the end of this year to become a Suzhou landmark as the largest arch-shaped building in the world with 69 stores, a luxury hotel, offices and shopping mall, local media reported.
Photographs of the half-completed building spread widely online, but the 4.5 billion yuan (US$709.6 million) project failed to please.
"Isn't that the long underpants that we usually wear in the autumn days? So it's true that art comes from life" was one comment.
"Is the jeans-shaped 'gate' asking us to live under its pants? This poor design is really a shame to its title to be world's No. 1" was another.
Some said the new building reminded them of China Central Television's headquarters in Beijing, nicknamed Big Shorts.
"Thanks to the Long Underpants, Big Shorts are lonely no more," said one netizen.
Computer users have been adding upper bodies on top of the building to poke fun at it.
In one set of photographs that is proving wildly popular, naked women's bodies were added on top of the building which plays the part of a pair of low-cut jeans.
In other pictures, comic superhero character The Hulk is seen "wearing" the building while yelling: "Finally, I have some long underpants to wear!"
