Jail breaker caught 14 years later for robbery, murder

A man who escaped 14 years ago from a detention prison with 10 other inmates while waiting for charges of robbery and murder was arrested last week, the Yaozhao Evening News reported today.

Li Junlin was among the 11 inmates who dug a tunnel in the detention prison of Handan City, Hebei Province and fled one night in January 1997. All other inmates were caught soon except Li who went to Yan'an in northwestern Shaanxi Province and lived there with a false identity.

Li, now 41, was a member of an armed gang in Handan, Hebei Province. They committed 22 robberies and many rapes between 1993 and 1996 in Hebei and neighboring Henan Province. One victim died and many others were injured. Four gang members were executed, police said.

Li and other gang members were caught in October 1996. While waiting for court trials, they dug out a tunnel with bare hands in the sandy ground under the cover of night, the newspaper said.

After the prison break, Li went all the way to Yan'an in Shaanxi Province and settled down there. Later he married a local woman and became the father of four children.

Police found clues to his whereabouts in November and caught him on December 7, the report said.
