Jail for corrupt official
AN official of the State Food and Drug Administration has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for taking bribes of 1.3 million yuan (US$195,589) to help drug companies get their products approved.
Chen Haifeng, 40, the ex-chief of the Center of Drug Evaluation affiliated to the administration, was accused of taking bribes from several companies to let them avoid checks and get medical licenses for products during his three-year tenure, reports the Beijing Times.
The court also confiscated 200,000 yuan of Chen's personal property.
Chen appealed against his sentence, arguing the money he received from a Zhejiang-based company was for his research work in the °?inspection process of three drugs.
Chen accepted 500,000 yuan from the company's general manager, surnamed Gu, in 2005 to get its three drugs approved without undergoing essential inspection, which usually takes one to three years.
Chen is not the country's first drug official to be involved in a corruption scandal. In April, five administration officials were arrested and another was suspended from his post after a drug company released a report accusing them of taking bribes.
