Jail for drunk driver who killed 2, injured 23

AN unlicensed drunk driver who killed two people and injured another 23 when he crashed into a night market has been jailed for 15 years, today's Dbw.cn Website reported.

Technician Zhang Xijun was convicted of endangering public security by Jixi City Intermediate People's Court in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

Zhang was drinking on August 5 before he knocked down two pedestrians at a crossing in Jixi's Jiguan District, the court said.

Zhang stepped out to negotiate with the victims. Passing police officers stepped in but suddenly, Zhang leapt into his car and rammed it into a crowd of pedestrians and street vendors. Consequently, two people died, seven people suffered light injuries and 16 got minor injuries.

Tests indicated Zhang's blood alcohol level was 198mg/100ml, compared with the maximum limit of 80mg/100ml.

Before today's verdict, Zhang had reached compensation deals with the victims and their families, the report said without specifying the details.
