Jail for exam scam organizers

EIGHT parents and teachers in east China who sent examination answers to their children through secret radio earphones have been imprisoned.

The Sanmen County Court in Zhejiang Province on Tuesday sentenced the eight to prison for between six months and three years for conspiring to cheat in the national college entrance examination in 2007, the Legal Daily reported today.

The eight were charged with illegally obtaining state secrets.

The cheating was uncovered after police in Sanmen County detected abnormal radio signals around the examination rooms on June 8, 2007. They traced the signals and caught 12 people cheating.

A group of parents who were worried about their students' academic performances planned the operation early in June.

The group, headed by Shi, bought test papers and some of the answers from another suspect surnamed Lin. Lin faxed the papers to Shi after the examinations began. Shi had organized six college students to provide the answers which he then sent to the children in their examination rooms via wireless earphones.

A businessman surnamed Huang joined the group after learning of its success. Huang had organized nine teachers to provide answers for his son who was to sit the examination.

After negotiations, Huang and Shi agreed to share resources.

They were later joined by a teacher surnamed Xie and another businessman surnamed Li.

Xie and Li were engaged in a separate cheating operation which went sour in the maths exam on June 7 because of technical problems. Parents who had paid thousands of yuan each were angry and demanded that they fix it.

Pressured by the parents, Xie and Li joined Shi's group and the two groups launched the scam on June 8.

This was not the only exam cheating operation involving high-tech radio equipment. Similar schemes have been reported in Zhejiang's Yongkang and Wenzhou cities, according to the provincial examination authority.
