Jail for student robber
A BEIJING university student was sentenced to 10 years in prison yesterday for robbing a bank of 100,000 yuan (US$14,700) after taking a woman hostage at knifepoint.
Li Li, a student at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, was also fined 20,000 yuan at Haidian District People's Court, China National Radio reported.
Li was charged with hostage taking but finally convicted of robbery. Li, born to a rural family in east China's Jiangxi Province, enrolled at the university in 2003 but had to quit school after regularly failing examinations due to taking too many jobs to raise thetuition fees, his father said.
On July 12 last year, he ran into a Bank of China branch at the university, took out a knife and grabbed a woman customer.
He demanded money and attacked a man who tried to help the woman.
The bank called the police but handed over the money, worried he would hurt the woman. Li fled, leaving the woman with small cuts to her neck and wrist.
Police and university security guards identified Li from security videos.
About 2,000 people from Li's village had signed a letter to the court asking for leniency because the student had been diagnosed as suffering from depression and had also contracted hepatitis B.
