Jail sentence of former education official upheld
A COURT in central China’s Henan Province upheld a 15-year jail term against a former educational official who had four fake identification cards and millions in ill-gotten wealth, Legal Weekly reported yesterday.
Feng Zhe was the former director of the auditing department and deputy director of finance section of the provincial education department. He was found to have taken bribes of up to 2.334 million yuan (US$381,142.2) and have another 7.985 million yuan from unknown sources.
He had spent 3.252 million yuan buying nine houses and deposited 4 million yuan in his personal bank accounts under five identifications, prosecutors said.
An investigator said Feng had taken bribes from nearly 100 primary and middle schools around the province for 14 years. Most cases concerned educational projects.
“We need huge investment on education, but funds distributed by county authorities aren’t enough,” said a local school official who had paid Feng 2,000 yuan as bribe. “We have to find ways to raise more funds from provincial or state authorities,” he said.
Feng was detained on May 24, 2011. The Mengjin County Peoples’ Court sentenced him to 15 years in jail on December 18, 2012. Feng appealed for a lighter sentence but the Luoyang Intermediate People’s Court rejected it.
