Jail sentences for fake rabies vaccination gang
EIGHT people in southern China have received jail sentences of up to two-and-a-half years for producing and selling a fake rabies vaccine that led to the death of a five-year-old boy and put more than 1,000 others at risk.
The eight suspects were part of a network that distributed more than 1,200 fake rabies shots, which were eventually given to patients at private clinics and village hospitals in Laibin City in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region between August and December 2009, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
Yang Bin bought the fake vaccinations for 10 yuan (US$1.50) each from a man surnamed Chen, who is still at large. Yang then sold the shots to Zhang Zhida, who then resold them to another convicted offender surnamed He. Zhang also provided false government certificates, registration marks and faked the production date of the shots.
The former deputy president of a pharmaceutical company in Laibin City surnamed Wei sold the vaccines for 160 yuan each, the report said. Another four people were also convicted for their involvement in the case.
Laibin City's drug watchdog said the authorities had confiscated 1,263 fake rabies shots. The fake vaccines were mostly water. Some 1,214 of the shots had already been used.
Local authorities said the five-year-old boy was the only confirmed fatality linked to the fake vaccinations. By June 2010, health workers had tracked down everyone who received a fake vaccine and given them a standard shot.
