Jailbreak trio deny resorting to violence

A two-day trial of three men accused of killing a guard during a prison break last September ended yesterday with no verdict announced.

Prosecutors had told Harbin Intermediate People’s Court in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province that Duan Baoren, who had been bound and gagged by Gao Yulun, Wang Damin and Li Haiwei, later died from suffocation.

Gao, 51, Wang, 36, and Li, 30, told the court they hadn’t resorted to violence and had no plan to kill the guard, according to a China National Radio report.

Under Chinese law, escaped prisoners can face the death sentence if violence is involved in a breakout.

Li told the court that he had only followed Gao and Wang as he wanted to go home to see his son.

Duan’s family has asked for 1 million yuan (US$161,331) compensation from the accused.
