Jailbreak trio on trial for guard’s killing

THE trial of three men accused of killing a guard while escaping from jail last year opened yesterday in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province.

The defendants: Gao Yulun, Wang Damin and Li Haiwei, escaped from a detention center in Yanshou County, Heilongjiang last September, and were recaptured several days later, the Harbin People’s Procuratorate said.

Prior to the jailbreak Gao, 51, was awaiting execution for murder, Wang, 36, was detained on suspicion of theft, vandalism and intentional injury, and Li, 30, was facing a murder charge.

According to prosecutors, Gao and Wang masterminded the escape after noticing that a prison guard named Duan Baoren never locked the cell they shared.

They later invited Li to join them and on September 1, the trio escaped by following Duan into a duty room and overpowering him, prosecutors said.

The guard was bound and gagged, and later died from suffocation, they said.

A manhunt was launched for the three prisoners and they were recaptured separately over the following 10 days.

An investigation into the incident led to the suspension of the county’s deputy police chief, the director of the detention house and two police officers.

The trial at the Harbin Intermediate People’s Court continues today.
