Jailed ATM thief released on parole

A MAN first jailed for life, then sentenced for five years and fined 20,000 yuan (US$2,952) for taking 175,000 yuan from a malfunctioning ATM has been released on parole.

Xu Ting, a Shanxi Province native working in south China's Guangzhou City, won nationwide sympathy after his original sentence. He appealed and the sentence was reduced to five years.

When Xu was released on Saturday, the Guangzhou Daily reported, he bowed three times at the prison gate, and thanked the court.

But Xu's father was angered by his son's act.

Xu Cailiang said he should not have been found guilty for what was the bank's fault.

Xu should never have paid the fine, he said. That was a confession of guilt and disappointed many people.

Xu discovered in April 2006 when withdrawing cash from an ATM that it gave out 1,000 yuan but only deducted 1 yuan from his account.

He then repeated the transaction many times.
