Jailed for monk's death
A court in southwest China's Sichuan Province yesterday sentenced a Tibetan lama to 11 years in prison for intentional homicide over a young monk's self-immolation death.
Drongdru, a monk in the Kirti Monastery in Aba Tibetan-Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, was jailed for hiding the injured monk, preventing emergency treatment and causing the 16-year-old's death.
Phuntsog, a disciple and nephew of Drongdru, set himself on fire on March 16 and was hidden for 11 hours. He died the next morning.
Drongdru, 46, pleaded guilty. He expressed regret and asked for leniency. He said he would not appeal against the verdict.
Another two monks are due to stand trial today in the same case. They are charged with plotting, instigating and assisting self-immolation.
