Japanese group departs for the Diaoyu Islands
A group of Japanese activists, including parliamentarians, departed from Ishigaki City, Okinawa, and were heading to the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea last night to declare sovereignty over the islands, the Daily Yomiuri reported.
Twenty-one vessels carrying 150 people, including eight members of the Japanese Diet from Liberal Democratic Party, Kizuna Party and the ruling Japan Democratic Party, set sail from several fishing ports of Ishigaki.
The group is estimated to arrive at the islands this morning and return to Ishigaki in the afternoon.
They will hold a ceremony for people who died in WWII and then investigate the fishing areas in the waters around the islands.
The organizer said the Japanese government rejected the application from the group earlier this month to land on the Diaoyu Islands, thus the ceremony will take place on the boats.
Meanwhile, seven of the 14 Chinese activists illegally detained by Japanese police for landing on one of the islands on Wednesday arrived in Hong Kong on Friday night.
The other seven have boarded a Japan Coast Guard plane and will be flown to Ishigaki Island, where their vessel was detained.
