Japanese invaders

FUDAN University yesterday launched an exhibition of photographs, documents and film footage from its archive showing the damage caused to the institution by the invading Japanese army in 1937.

Among the items on show are illustrated reports from Japanese newspapers that praised the troops’ success in occupying the university, which was described as one of the best in China.

The reports said the Japanese army occupied Fudan University on October 24, 1937.

The invading forces used the seat of learning as a military base and even opened bathhouses there.

The school’s archive includes a wooden board used in ritual ceremonies by the Japanese forces when laying the foundations for the bathhouses.

Officials from the university archives said Japanese troops violated the Hague Conventions, which prohibit invading armies from damaging the cultural facilities of another country.
