Japanese man arrested after 3kg of drugs found
A 70-YEAR-OLD Japanese local politician has been arrested in China on drugs charges, officials said yesterday.
The Japanese man, who was detained at the airport on October 31 in the southern metropolis Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, had 3 kilograms of what are suspected to be illegal stimulants, the Japanese foreign ministry said, citing Chinese authorities.
“At present, the local authorities are going through legal procedures to put him on trial,” a Japanese official said yesterday.
Officials in the central Japanese city of Inazawa identified the man as Takuma Sakuragi and said the city councilor was in China on his private trading business.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said yesterday that Takuma was taken into custody on October 31 at Baiyun International Airport in Guangzhou, while carrying drugs with him.
He is now in the Guangzhou detention center, Hong added.
China informed the Consulate General of Japan in Guangzhou, and Japanese diplomats visited him, Hong told reporters in Beijing.
“Further investigations on the case are under way,” Hong said.
The Japanese could now face the death penalty under China’s drugs laws.
The case comes after four Japanese nationals were executed in China in 2010 for carrying illegal drugs.
Possession of 50 or more grams of so-called stimulant drugs — such as methamphetamine, also called crystal meth — can lead to the death penalty in China, which is known for its strict drug laws.
