Japan-made buckets used for fermentation and storage being sold at excessive prices

Japanese made plastic buckets used for fermentation and storage are being sold at exorbitant prices in Zhejiang Province as the seller is claiming they can cure cancer among other health benefits.

The ASK buckets were sold for between 450 yuan (US$73.57) and 550 yuan each in Cixi City, Zhejiang Province, Xiandai Jinbao reported today.

A doctor surnamed Hua told the Zhejiang-based newspaper that his mother forced him to drink a liquid she had made from the 9-liter bucket. His mother paid 550 yuan for the bucket.

The liquid smelled like fermented rice and had a sweet and sour taste, he was cited as saying.

Hua's aunt also bought a bucket and had been drinking a self-made liquid, though no discomfort was reported yet.

The buckets include Chinese instructions on how to make the liquid. The instructions tell users to mix 1 kilogram of sliced fruit, 1kg of sugar and 6 liters of water into the bucket. The mixture is to be stirred twice daily for seven days. The seller claims the final product can help people lose weight, reduce blood pressure and blood fat, and even cure diseases like cancer, the report said.

Dozens of such buckets have been sold in Cixi, though buyers have refused to give detailed information about the seller, who is said to be a friend of theirs, according to the newspaper.

Fermentation buckets are common in Japan. They can be sealed and are often used to store rice and other foods. Some will put kitchen waste into them to make organic fertilizer.

ASK buckets can be purchased in Japan for 2,100 yen (US$20.41) to 3,150 Japanese yen.
