Jaycee Chan given 6 months’ jail
ACTOR Jaycee Chan was yesterday sentenced to six months in prison and fined 2,000 yuan (US$322) at the Dongcheng District People’s Court in Beijing after being found guilty of a drugs offense last year.
According to a report by Sina.com, Chan’s agent said the 32-year-old son of kung fu movie star Jackie Chan will not appeal the verdict.
As Chan has been in custody since August 14, he will be released on February 13, while the fine must be paid within 10 days, the court said.
In court, Chan, dressed in blue trousers and a black sweater, admitted to the charge leveled against him of providing a venue for other drug users.
“I deserve the punishment as I violated the law. I’ve disappointed my family and friends, but I promise it will never happen again,” he said.
“Though I’ve been punished, it doesn’t mean I have been forgiven.
“I wish to obtain forgiveness and pass positive energy to others in the future,” he said.
Chan’s crime was something of an embarrassment to his father, who was named as a goodwill ambassador for China’s National Anti-Drug Committee in 2009.
The elder Chan was not in court yesterday, though China News Agency reported earlier that he had instructed his lawyers not to interfere in the case.
Jaycee Chan’s agent, identified in the Sina report only as “Steven” was quoted as saying: “His (Chan’s) parents respect the judgment. They hope he can learn from it, but also hope the public gives him one more chance.”
Several celebrities were detained on drug-related charges last year. Under Chinese law, anyone found guilty of providing a venue for other drug users faces a sentence of up to three years in prison.
Singer Li Daimo was released last month after serving nine months in prison for the crime.
Chan’s sentence was more lenient as his offense was less serious and he confessed, the court said.
Chan was detained along with Taiwan movie star 23-year-old Ko Chen-tung by Beijing police on August 14 last year. Ko served just two weeks’ detention for the lesser charge of drug use.
Police later found more than 100 grams of marijuana at Chan’s home.
