Jet Li finds his charity program run into dead end
KUNG-FU star Jet Li said he may have to halt the operations of his charity foundation on the mainland due to "unsurmountable legal barriers" which barred his organization from raising money to help the disadvantaged.
The actor-turned philanthropist expressed his frustration in an interview on China Central Television when talking about the possible abortion of his One Foundation project, which planned to collect one yuan (US$15 cents) from each person every day to create a large charity family.
Li said he saw many charity plans ran into dead ends because China's law only allows government-run charity organizations to get public donations.
Under the law, his three-year-old One Foundation can only operate in partnership with the Red Cross Society of China and receive donations through an account of the Red Cross, instead of its own, said Li on Sunday.
This operation system caused lots of troubles in implementing Li's plan. For example, he tried to develop a mobile phone platform to accept instant small-amount donations but only found the foundation mired in prolonged legal process and complicated issues which seemed impossible to solve due to the account ownership problem.
