Jiaxing schools closed for 3 days after 500 students sickened by stomach virus
SCHOOLS were closed starting today for three days in Jiaxing, a city in eastern Zhejiang Province, after more than 500 students were infected with norovirus, a stomach virus that can cause vomiting, diarrhea and cramps, health authorities said.
By noon today, the virus had sickened 511 children from 10 schools and three kindergartens in Haining and Haiyan cities. Their symptoms included vomiting and diarrhea.
No severe cases or deaths were reported, according to officials at the Jiaxing Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Noroviruses are a group of viruses that cause inflammation of the stomach and lining of the large intestine, according to webmd.com.
