Jilin official investigated for graft
The vice governor of northeast Jilin Province is being investigated for suspected 鈥渟evere violation of laws and disciplines,鈥 the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection has announced.
Gu Chunli, 58, worked in his home province of Liaoning, Jilin鈥檚 neighbor to the north, for 38 years before he was put in charge of work safety in Jilin in January 2013.
About two months after he took office, a coal mine caught fire, killing 36 workers. Three days later, another explosion killed 17 people.
In June 2013, a fire at a poultry plant left 121 people dead and 76 injured.
More than 100 government officials and company executives, including Gu, were punished for a lack of work safety supervision.
Gu was at the center of controversy over demolition projects during his time as mayor and Party chief in Liaoning鈥檚 Anshan from 2005 and 2010, according to Honesty Outlook magazine.
