Jilin police arrest poachers for killing 5 bears in Changbai Mountains

FIVE people have been detained for brutally killing five bears in the Changbai Mountains in northeast China's Jilin Province.

Wang Yan, director of the Changbai Mountains Public Security Bureau, told the media yesterday that they held the five people in custody and granted bail to several more suspects.

Police have sent three teams to Beijing and Harbin, capital of neighboring Heilongjiang Province to conduct postmortem exams to determine the cause of death of the five slain bears found in the forests. The results would be available in a few weeks.

Online allegations said five of the 33 wild bears counted in the forested mountain range, including moon bears and brown bears, had been poached since early this year.

The illegal hunters killed the bears for gallbladders, paws and fur. The remains of the butchered bears were found in a hillside in the northern part of Changbai Mountain range, a wildlife monitor and author, Hu Donglin, wrote on his blog.
