Jilted lover throws girlfriend off bridge

POLICE detained a man who allegedly tried to kill his girlfriend by throwing her off a 16-meter-high bridge in northeastern China because he couldn't afford the betrothal gift.

Bi Shengcai, 33, threw his 21-year-old girlfriend surnamed Xin off an overpass in Meihekou City on Wednesday night, smashing her tailbone. Though her life is not in danger, she may have to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair, Xin Wen Hua Bao newspaper quoted her doctor as saying today.

Bi told police that he was surprised his girlfriend survived the fall. He confessed that he wanted her dead because she wanted to break up when he could not afford a 150,000 yuan (US$22,000) betrothal gift and a new apartment her parents wanted.

Bi was arrested in a taxi on Wednesday when the cab driver surnamed Li reported to police that he saw the attempted murder.

Li said the couple got into his cab at around 8pm, looking like they just had a fight and did not say a word. Bi told Li to pull over on an overpass, dragged his girlfriend out of the cab and threw her over the bridge.

Before Li had time to react, Bi got into his cab again and told him to run. Li fled his taxi at a toll station and reported the incident to police.

Bi allegedly confessed that he first wanted to drown his girlfriend but the driver told him the only lake in the city had dried up a long time ago.

Bi met Xin last June and fell in love soon after. He proposed many times but her family stood in the way, insisting that the cash and a new apartment was the only way to convince them that their daughter would be happy with him.

Bi tried to earn the money by working hard in Dalian City for three months, but his savings were far from enough, the report said.

He called and asked out Xin on Wednesday and tried to negotiate down the price. But Xin refused and said she wanted to break up if he could not afford the money.

Xin told police that Bi was always the jealous type when they were together. He stabbed her in the leg last year because a strange man talked to her.

Police said the investigation is continuing.
