Joint plan to rescue kidnapped Chinese
CHINA will work with Pakistan to make every effort to rescue two Chinese nationals abducted in the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta on Wednesday, a foreign ministry spokesman said yesterday.
Lu Kang told a daily press briefing that China attached great importance to the safety and security of Chinese nationals overseas and denounced abduction in all its forms.
“The Chinese government has maintained close communication with Pakistan since the abduction took place and urged Pakistan to take all necessary measures to secure the early release of the hostages,” Lu said.
He said China also called on Pakistan to take further steps to ensure the safety and security of other Chinese nationals and institutions in the country.
“The Chinese government will work with the Pakistani side to spare no effort to rescue the two nationals at an early date,” he said.
The couple, both language teachers, were kidnapped by unknown gunmen in the provincial capital of Pakistan’s southwest Balochistan Province.
Pretending to be police officers, they initially took away three Chinese, two women and a man, but passer-by Muhammad Zahir helped one woman escape. He was shot in the leg by the kidnappers.
A search operation swung into action in Quetta and adjoining areas. According to some reports, several houses were raided outside the city.
Aitzaz Goraya, of the Quetta police, said: “We have collected evidence from the site, interviewed eyewitnesses, and monitored the CCTV footage. Basically, we have formed a strategy and now we are moving to execute it for the safe recovery of the Chinese.”
