Kidnap called cry for attention

A MAN who had grabbed a French tourist at knifepoint in Beijing said he did so not to harm the woman but to draw attention to his repeated corruption complaints about officials of his former working place.

Beijing's Chongwen District People's Procuratorate Office has filed a charge against the man surnamed Dou, yesterday's Legal Daily reported.

Dou, a native of Jiangxi Province, has been in Beijing for four years to complain to disciplinary superiors about the alleged corruption. But he failed to get satisfactory response and developed depression, according to local police.

To rouse wider public attention, he kidnapped an 82-year-old French woman who happened to pass by him while touring in Beijing's Qianmen Street.

The woman suffered injuries on her neck, forehead and fingers.

Dou told police he didn't mean to harm her with the violent action.
