Kidnap story has happy ending

BEIJING police said yesterday they had arrested a man suspected of abducting a girl, 4, from the capital city's leading hospital for children.

The man, surnamed Ren, stole the child from a bench outside a consulting room on the second floor of Beijing Children's Hospital last Monday, said Wang Wen, an officer with the Xicheng District Branch of the city's Public Security Bureau.

The family, from Laiyuan in neighboring Hebei Province, had taken the feverish child to Beijing for treatment and were dozing after she received a transfusion.

The girl's father, surnamed Yan, called police after he woke up and found the child had vanished, said Wang.

Video clips from surveillance cameras in and around the hospital showed a man took the child about 9pm, left the hospital and caught a bus, he said.

Police interviewed dozens of bus drivers. One of them recognized the man, and remembered he got off his bus with the child at a stop in southern Beijing.

"By Saturday afternoon, we were convinced the suspect had traveled to Baoding City in Hebei Province by train," said Wang.

The suspect, identified as Ren, was seized at Baoding's railway station at 6:30pm on Saturday, shortly after he got off the train with the child in his arms.

He told police that one of his acquaintances had promised to pay him 10,000 yuan (US$1,465) for a girl.

The girl was reunited with her parents in Beijing yesterday.
