Kidnapped baby's parents seek payout
THE family whose newborn baby was stolen from a hospital in northwestern Shaanxi Province are seeking 110,000 yuan (US$16,113) compensation despite the fact that she was returned unharmed after three days.
Father Yan Xiaohong said the money would cover mental distress and transport costs, but the First Hospital Affiliated to Xian Jiao Tong University also said it was a victim and refused to pay compensation, China Business News reported today.
A woman dressed in a nurse's uniform walked into Zhang Lanfang's maternity room early on November 21, saying tests had been ordered on the 15-hour-old girl, whom she took away.
The 22-year-old woman was arrested on Monday afternoon on suspicion of stealing Zhang's baby.
Hospital head Li Xu said the hospital had observed all the rules and it should not be the hospital's responsibility that the family was conned.
