Kidnapped girl, 17, chained in basement

A couple have been detained for allegedly imprisoning a 17-year-old girl in a basement in a southwest China city for 158 days to extort money from her father.

The girl, identified as Xiao Wen, was freed after being held captive in a dungeon beneath the couple's house in Ziyang City with her feet chained for five months, Chengdu Business Daily reported yesterday.

The foul-smelling dungeon measured just a few square meters.

Police claim Zhao Pingang and his wife Li Min chained the girl's feet to an 80-kilogram piece of metal from a vehicle. Li gave food to the girl every other day, police said.

They said the couple, in financial difficulty, decided to kidnap someone for ransom. They journeyed to Meishan City in April, abducted the girl and locked her in the basement.

Zhao called the girl's father and sent him a video clip showing his daughter screaming for help. He failed to contact the family for several months, until in September he sent a second video. Police analyzed the video, identified the house where Xiao was being held and raided it.
