Kidnapper goes to jail

A POLICE officer in Jilin Province has been sentenced to 11 years in prison and fined 80,000 yuan (US$11,765) by Huichun City People's Court for kidnapping one of his superiors and asking a ransom of 1 million yuan, a newspaper in Jilin reported yesterday.

Zheng Huanming, a director of Huichun Forest Public Security Bureau, first kidnapped the chauffeur of Liu Huai, director of Yanbian Forestry Administration, on November 18 with two accomplices, according to Changchun-based New Culture Daily.

They drove to Liu's home the next morning and told Liu that they were from the provincial prosecutor's office and would take him for questioning in Changchun.

They were stopped by police at a checkpoint in Huichun, where officers found the chauffeur in handcuffs. Police caught Zheng Huanju, Zheng's brother, immediately. But Zheng Huanming and his other accomplice, Sun Jihong, escaped by smashing the car through the checkpoint. Knowing police were looking for them, Zheng Huanming then freed Liu and his chauffeur. Police caught Zheng Huanming and Sun on November 24.

Zheng Huanju was jailed for six and a half years and Sun six years.
