Kids scared by bloody trimming of antlers at zoo, report says

CHILDREN were scared when two spotted deer at the Beijing Zoo had their antlers cut, drawing blood, the Legal Evening News today.

The antlers of spotted deer were cut to 4 centimeters -- zoo staff said they use a saw to cut the antlers to prevent male deer from hurting other deer and people. They said male deer become aggressive during mating season.

Antlers of the spotted deer were cut in the yard instead of in an inside enclosure because of limited space, staff members said.

It is a common practice to cut the antlers of spotted deer in zoos, said Zhang Jinshuo, a doctorate in zoology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
