Killer given suspended prison term after payout

THE owner of a real estate business in Foshan, south China’s Guangdong Province, who caused the death of a young woman has escaped a prison sentence by paying off his victim’s parents.

The 35-year-old businessman, surnamed Ho, went for a swim at a reservoir in Foshan on October 16 last year. While there, he saw a woman in her 20s on a floating platform and decided to play a joke on her, the New Express Daily quoted him as saying yesterday.

Ho, who is from  Macau, swam up to the woman, nicknamed Junjun, and pulled her into the water. Though he released her once in the water, the woman failed to surface, as she could not swim, the report said.

After realizing what had happened, Ho and other people in the area began searching for the woman and eventually pulled her from the water. Junjun, however, died and doctors attributed the cause to drowning.

After the incident, Ho handed himself in to police and confessed to the crime.

At Zengcheng People’s Court recently, Ho expressed his regret for what he had done and apologized to the victim’s family.

“I didn’t expect my joke to result in the death of a young woman,” he said.

Junjun’s parents forgave their daughter’s killer after he agreed to pay them 5 million Macau pataca (US$626,500) in compensation.

As a result of his contrition and the large compensation payment, Ho was sentenced to 18 months in prison with a two-year reprieve, the report said.
