Killer hit-and-run suspect surrenders
A MAN wanted for the hit-and-run killing of four junior high school students in northwestern Shaanxi Province last Tuesday surrendered himself to police yesterday, a Xi'an-based newspaper reported today.
Wang Shuangwa was accompanied by relatives when he surrendered to police, officials told a press conference last night in Xi'an, capital city of Shaanxi Province, according to the Chinese Business View report.
Wang, 41, was allegedly driving a truck along a road when it crashed into a group of cyclists from Doumen High School in Xi'an's Chang'an District at 6:05am last Tuesday.
The truck continued driving after the collision and some of the students were dragged 170 meters along the road. Wang said he had been sleepy at the time and fled because he was afraid, police said..
After delivering a consignment of concrete slabs in the truck to a local factory, he parked in a gas station in Xunyi County and placed the registration plates inside the cab. He fled to Urumqi in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and decided to surrender to police after five hours.
In the meantime police in Xi'an had offered a 100,000-yuan (US$14,600) reward for the arrest of the driver. A task force of more than 200 led by Wu Jinbiao, director of Xi'an Public Security Bureau, began investigating the crime.
More than 10,000 police officers around the capital were also on the lookout for the driver who was being urged to surrender through the media.
Police named Wang as the suspect last Friday and were on the way to arrest him yesterday when he surrendered, after being persuaded to by a close friend.
