Killer holds 8 women, babies at knifepoint

A MAN was caught in east China's Fujian Province yesterday for allegedly holding eight women and newborn babies at knifepoint after killing his former brother-in-law and injuring his ex-wife and a guard.

The hostages were all rescued safely and the 10 police officers joining the operation were given awards for their conduct, China National Radio reported today.

Police in Fuzhou, Fujian's capital, were told of the kidnapping at 10:28am yesterday at Jiangtai District No.1 Hospital. Those held at knifepoint were three new mothers and their three baby boys as well as a pregnant woman and a nursing worker.

The suspect used two beds to block the door and the window. He then threatened to kill a newborn baby with his knife. After talks failed between Zeng and police, 10 officers stormed the ward and tackled him, rescuing all hostages unharmed, the report said.

Police soon linked the case to a murder earlier that morning when a man surnamed Zhan, 28, was killed. The man's sister and a community guard were injured. The attacker was allegedly the sister's former husband surnamed Zeng, who was divorced on April 1.

Zeng had been detained for 15 days earlier this year for using drugs.
