Killer of 8 kids says he had wanted to slay 30
THE man who killed eight children and injured another five in a killing spree in eastern China's Fujian Province said yesterday he had no regrets over the tragedy and that he had planned to kill 30 kids.
Authorities gave him an insanity test.
The assailant Zheng Minsheng, speaking calmly and with exact details when police officers in Nanping City took him back to the school gate of Nanping Experimental School where the 55-second bloodbath took place on Tuesday, recounted how he grabbed boys and girls and stabbed a kitchen knife in their chests.
Zheng showed no sympathy or regrets at all, said a police officer quoted by China News Service yesterday.
A local mental hospital said the test result of Zheng would come out in about 15 weekdays.
One of the five injured children was still in critical condition. A doctor said that Zheng stabbed deep in the victims' chests and deliberately smashed their lungs.
The student with the slightest wound was a girl who came back to consciousness the day after the stabbings. She caught the knife when Zheng tried to stab her and he didn't hurt her main organs.
Other injured students were still getting medical attention at intensive care units in the city's No.1 Hospital. A girl's right lung was punctured; another girl was injured in the liver. Doctors said the most seriously hurt child could end up in a vegetative state for the rest of his life.
Zheng's rampage not only plunged the families of 13 victims into mourning, but also cast a shadow on other kids who were there.
A father said his boy had trouble sleeping for three days after the Tuesday morning rampage. He said the boy refused to touch anything red, not even his favorite red scarf, saying they were all blood tainted.
Therapist said many students at the school showed symptoms of post-traumatic stress. Many dropped out of classes and others were apparently still in shock.
But the attacker, a former surgeon in a community school who told investigators he felt life was meaningless after romantic failures and a fruitless job search, was recalled by neighbors as "a little introverted but very nice man" who began turning strange and started to alienate everybody eight months ago.
Children living in the community used to be good friends with Zheng, who bought them candies and little snacks, a neighbor said. Every kid liked to play with him. A girl who used to befriend Zheng, said he started to act weirdly only since last August.
