Killer surrenders to police after 17 years on the run
THE runaway organizer of an armed gang fight which left 21 people dead and 11 missing in 1994 in the western Sichuan Province has surrendered to police after 17 years in hiding, the West China City Daily reported.
The suspect surnamed Li, about 60, organized more than 80 gang members to fight another gang over the control of a gold mine in Qingchuan County on October 17, 1994.
They ambushed the three buses carrying their rivals on a road with homemade explosives and shotguns. The battle left 21 people dead, 11 missing and three buses destroyed.
Most of the gang members were later captured by police, but Li managed to escape.
Since police didn't have Li's identification data or photos, their manhunt in the past 17 years was fruitless.
An opportunity emerged in late September when a retired police officer reminded Sichuan police that Li had a 9-year-old daughter in 1994, who should be about to get married.
Police made an investigation and soon found that Li's daughter was indeed about to get married in October.
The officers talked with her and through her talked with her father by phone.
Zhang Jiahe, Qingchuan County police chief, convinced Li that he would be allowed to attend his daughter's wedding if he agreed to surrender.
As promised, after attending the wedding on Wednesday, Li gave himself up to the local police.
