Killer's girlfriend kept his cash in her bank account

THE girlfriend of slain serial killer Zhou Kehua was involved in his crimes and could face criminal punishment, police in Chongqing said yesterday.

Zhang Guiying, 20, who worked at a salon in the southwestern city, told Zhou, who was divorced, he could deposit the money he robbed in her bank account, police told reporters.

She even questioned Zhou why the money from him was far less than reported in the media after Zhou claimed at least three lives in a robbery in Chongqing last Friday, police said.

Media reports said Zhou had stole 250,000 yuan (US$39,275) but he actually escaped with just 70,000 yuan in cash.

Zhou met Zhang at the salon in January when he fled to Chongqing in the wake of a nationwide hunt after he killed a construction worker in Nanjing City and stole 200,000 yuan.

The two are said to have fallen in love and soon Zhou revealed his real identity and told her about his crimes.

But Zhang didn't go to the police and maintained the relationship.

Zhou gave her pocket money of 1,000 yuan each time the two met and later deposited the 200,000 yuan from the Nanjing robbery in Zhang's account, Shanghai-based Xinmin Evening News reported.

Before Zhou committed his final robbery in Chongqing on August 10, he had invited Zhang to come along to see him in action. But Zhang failed to get up in time, the report said.

Zhou killed a woman and wounded two people outside a Bank of China branch and later shot dead a railway police officer who tried to question him.

Liao Deying, one of the people wounded during the bank robbery in Chongqing, was declared brain dead yesterday.

That brought the number of people Zhou had killed over the past eight years to 11, police said.

Zhou was in the habit of keeping in touch with Zhang via his mobile phone and that was what helped police pinpoint his whereabouts.

Minutes before Zhou opened fire on police in the alley where he was shot dead by two officers on Tuesday, he was seen talking on the phone.

Police monitoring the call said Zhou was telling Zhang about his last robbery.

A China Central Television report said Zhou would contact his girlfriend before and after his robberies.

"Zhou would tell his girlfriend his thoughts on the robberies and the details of the crimes," Xinmin Evening News reported.

But Zhang had never thought to contact the police.

Police are still questioning her about the possibility of other crimes.

Meanwhile, Zhou's ex-wife could also be in trouble as she knew Zhou had killed a sentry outside a barracks in Chongqing in 2009. She also knew he had stolen a rifle and had buried it on a mountain but failed to tell police.

Zhou was greatly excited when he brought the rifle home because he was extremely fond of guns, she told police.

Zhou posed with the rifle in front of her, asking her whether he looked good with the gun, the Xinmin report said.

The newspaper said Zhou told her where he had buried the gun when they were passing by the scene on a bus.

Searches on the mountain have yet to find the weapon.
