Killer-turned-monk arrested after 17 years at large
JIANGXI Police has detained a fugitive who was on the run for 17 years and worked as a monastery manager of a famous temple in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, the New Legal Report said today.
The suspect, Xu Xinlian, 37, was allegedly involved in the fatal stabbing of a family in Jiujiang County, Jiangxi Province on July 27, 1994. Police said the parents respectively died of 56 and 17 fatal stabs and their two-year-old son suffered 10 stab wounds during the bloody slaying.
Xu was the only suspect at large while the five other gang members were all held by the police and received sentences on September 8, 1995. Three were given death penalties for murder and had been executed by shooting, one was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve and the last was jailed for 15 years, the newspaper reported.
Police said Xu escaped and became a monk, named Weidi, in a temple in Anhui Province in October, 1995. He then pursued studies in a Buddhist institution for three years in Xiamen, Fujian Province and went on a visiting tour to various temples around China.
In October 2000, Xu became a monk in a well-known temple near West Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, where he started his peaceful live as a monk for 11 years. During his stay, Xu acquired an adult bachelor's degree from Zhejiang University and a second grade engineering certificate for civil construction.
In 2005, Xu started using the fake identity of Luo Mingsheng, who was the son of a farmer in Guangdong Province and had been missing for many years.
Police said although Xu kept a low profile, he enjoyed popularity within the Buddhist community and had been abroad on visiting studies to many foreign countries in Europe and Asia, using his fake identity.
Xu was apprehended at about 10pm on November 28 in his room at the temple.
