Killing spree stopped in mid-attack

A MAN suspected of killing four people and injuring two others in central Hubei Province yesterday morning was stopped by a businessman and eventually caught by police, a Guangzhou-based newspaper reported today.

Ke Jianping, 29, allegedly had a dispute with a barber shop assistant at around 8am in Bao'an Town of Dazhi City and stabbed her in the neck, chest and hand with a 30-centimeter knife. He is alleged to have then burned her to death, according to the Guangzhou Daily report.

While fleeing the scene, Ke allegedly killed another three people, including a cleaner, a TV cable repairman working nearby and a woman passing by with her 1-year-old grandson. Two other bystanders were also wounded.

None of the victims knew Ke, the report said.

Li Qingsheng, director of a Bao'an Town agriculture machine center, intervened when he saw Ke's killing spree. He grabbed a shoulder pole at the gate of nearby grain shop and beat Ke while he was stabbing the grandmother, according to a report by Zhang Zhiming, director of Dazhi's criminal investigation team.

Li made the baby safe and cornered Ke with the shoulder pole until two patrolling policemen walked by. Ke tried to commit suicide, cutting his own throat twice.

Both bystanders and Ke were taken to hospital in Huangshi City for treatment. Police investigations continue.
