Kindergarten admits giving antiviral drugs
AUTHORITIES in Lanzhou, capital of northwest China’s Gansu Province, are investigating reports that a privately owned kindergarten fed children with antiviral drugs to prevent them getting ill.
Parents gathered outside the Litian Kindergarten yesterday, saying their children had been complaining of pains and rashes since last year, after they were given “sugar water.”
Kindergarten principal Nie Aiqin admitted giving children the prescription medicine Ribavirin, often used to treat hepatitis C and viral hemorrhagic fevers.
She said a student got hand, foot and mouth disease last October. In order to prevent others being infected, the kindergarten bought 50 boxes of Ribavirin. Children were given it three times a day in two separate days, she said.
The kindergarten has more than 270 students.
Parents were furious when a teacher revealed the practice on Monday during an online discussion with parents.
Over the past few days, kindergartens in several provinces have admitted giving antiviral drugs.
