Kindergarten lunch puts 100 children in hospital
MORE than 100 children and their teachers at a kindergarten in Shanxi Province were taken to hospital when they took ill after eating lunch on Monday.
An initial investigation identified nitrite poisoning.
Local government officials said the pupils and teachers from Beibeile Kindergarten in Xi'an City, capital of Shanxi Province, were all taken for checks after they had eaten in the school's canteen.
Police said the kindergarten, which had been closed down, was not legally registered nor had any food safety certificates.
Two men have been detained, including the kindergarten president and a chef, and police are investigating local salt sellers to find out the source of the poison.
Nitrite looks and tastes like salt, but eating it will cause severe headaches and vomiting.
Officials said children began to show signs they had been poisoned at around noon on Monday after they had eaten huimashi, a local dish mainly made of noodles.
They complained of headaches, dry mouths and their faces changed color before many of them began to throw up.
All the children and the teachers were sent to five local hospitals for examination and various treatments depending on the severity of their symptoms.
According to doctors' reports and an investigation into the remains of the food eaten at lunch, the local administration judged it to be a case of nitrite poisoning.
Government officials said that parents sent their children to the unlicensed kindergarten because it was cheap and close to where they lived.
