Kneeling before parents as Youth Day ritual sparks debate
DURING a ceremony marking their entry into youth, junior students of a middle school in Guangzhou, south China, were asked to kneel down on ground to receive a letter of expectation from their parents. The scene has sparked controversy online.
Although Guangdong Experimental School claimed the ritual on the May 4th Youth Day gave students a chance to show respect for parents, many Chinese netizens said it was merely a showbiz, News Express reported yesterday.
One netizen named "ggo1o2" on Sohu.com.cn, a Chinese news portal, said: "Some students looked embarrassed and were pushed to kneel down by the organizer. Why can't we do something more practical to show our love for parents?"
But some people spoke highly of the ritual, saying it was a revival of a Chinese tradition.
Zheng Zhiqin, headmaster of Guangdong Experimental School, said they got the idea from a student and would hold the ceremony every year because of its good effect.
