Knife attacker slits own throat

A MAN stabbed and wounded six people in China's far west before killing himself by slitting his throat, police said yesterday.

The man, who was in his 20s, attacked the victims with a knife and scissors in Kashgar City in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to Xinhua news agency.

The attacks happened on Monday evening. The man killed himself as police were approaching him.

All six victims were taken to hospital, including a junior high school student who is in serious condition, Xinhua said.

It said that five bottles suspected of containing marijuana had been found in the man's pockets. So far, police had not given a reason for the attacks.

Meanwhile, the man suspected of killing 10 people last Thursday in northeastern China was described by investigators as having "lost his faith in life because of heavy debts, which led to the extreme activity."

Zhou Yuxin, 33, was caught the day after the killing spree not far from his hometown in Anshan City in Liaoning Province, when he was trying to take a nap at an Internet cafe.

The victims included his father, wife and son, employees and the landlord of a bathhouse he operated.

Zhou had confessed to killing the 10 with an iron hammer in Ertaizi Village in Anshan's Ningyuan Town.

Forensic tests found that DNA from a victim's body and that found on a bloody hammer in a minivan Zhou drove to flee the area was the same, police said.

Zhou is said to have told police that he had tried to find and kill his father-in-law after he had dismissed Zhou as "useless" for his business failures.

Investigators found that Zhou owed large amount of money from his business dealings.

All the 10 bodies were found at a bathhouse and a car wash in Ertaizi Village operated by Zhou.

Prosecutors also said that Zhou had suspected that his wife, Yan Bing, had been having an affair with a car wash worker, one of the 10 people he is suspected of having beaten to death.
